Koh Nang Yuan Day-Trip from Koh Tao

Central Thailand and Gulf of Thailand in 9 Days – Day 6

Koh Nang Yuan is a tiny island, only 15-20 min away from Koh Tao reached by longtail boat or ferry. It is a paradise for kayaking, snorkeling and scuba-diving. You can also kayak from Koh Tao to Koh Nang Yuan but it can be risky, though usually the water stays calm, except the rainy season. Koh Nang Yuan is my favorite island in Gulf of Thailand and I highly recommend everyone visiting Thailand must come here at least once.

Highlights of the Day

  • Breakfast with View of Gulf of Thailand
  • Explore Koh Nang Yuan
  • Dinner at Beachfront Restaurant of Ban’s Diving Resort, Koh Tao

Breakfast with View

For breakfast, we went uphill a little away from our hotel where there is a beautiful tiny place for breakfast with great views of the Gulf of Thailand.

The place serves delicious sandwiches, burritos, and different types of flakes and muesli with fresh fruits and others, almost every dish ranging from 90 ฿ to 120 ฿.

Exploring Koh Nang Yuan on Your Own

I spoke to the reception of The Beach Club, Koh Tao for arranging a round trip of Koh Nang Yuan by longtail boat and the receptionist arranged it at ease for 4 of us. This will also include life jacket and snorkeling equipment that have to be returned later.

The longtail boat leaves right in front of our hotel.

The entry fee of the island is 100 ฿ per person and you have to submit plastic bottles at the entrance if you are carrying any as plastic is prohibited in the island.

The island is a group of three sub-islets connected by a stretch of white sand and can be covered fully by walking.

We chose to climb to the viewpoint at first.

The island is very popular for snorkeling, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, climbing to the viewpoint, and of course diving.

After coming down the hill, we had our lunch at the restaurant of one and only resort in the island – Nang Yuan Resort. Being the only restaurant at the island, it is not at all economical and moreover, the quality of food was not satisfying.

After taking ample amount of rest at the beach, we geared up for snorkeling and continued playing in the water until 5 PM – almost the closing time for guests at Koh Nang Yuan.

The clean water of Koh Nang Yuan clearly depicts how good it would be for snorkeling and diving

We loved each and every moment spent at this extremely beautiful three-piece island, and took a long rest as we reached our hotel.

Dinner at Ban’s

Ban’s Diving Resort is a few meters uphill on the way to Sairee village. Its crowd had caught my attention yesterday when I was walking up to the village.

I always believe a crowded restaurant serves good food and bingo, I was correct!

The beachfront restaurant has a beautiful vibe and we managed to seat outdoor in the balcony in front of the beach. The food was excellent – there was vegan options, which I was super glad of. Also, there was live music 9 PM onward. The day was called off soon after dinner.

  1. I hadn’t heard of Koh Nang Yuan while I was in Koh Tao. Sounds like I missed out on a beautiful island. I think its great that they are trying to control plastic pollution by collecting the water bottles from people before entering the island. The place where you chose to have breakfast has an exceptional view.

  2. What a beautiful day exploring Koh Nang Yuan. You found a breakfast spot with a beautiful view of the Gulf of Thailand. The beach at Koh Nang Yuan with its white sand and clear waters are perfect for relaxing and snorkeling. It’s a shame that the only restaurant on the island was pricey and not very good. Nice stop in Thailand!

  3. Koh Nang Yuan looks absolutely stunning! I hadn’t heard of it before reading your post, but now it’s definitely on my list of places to visit when I eventually make it to Thailand. I just love little islands that you can cover by foot so this would be right up my street.

  4. Thailand is my favourite country in Asia! Its just so beautiful and peaceful! I actually never heard about Koh Nang Yuan, but it seems like a wonderful place! I love the fact you are not allowed to bring any plastic there! I read the news the other day, how the government had to close Phi Phi island as the amount of trash tourist are bringing is unavailable! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful place!

  5. I remember our trip a couple of months ago in Thailand. We were supposed to go Koh Nang Yuan but ran out of time. Now, we totally regret for not visiting the beach. This is such a wonderful experience. We will make sure to visit this next time.

  6. This seems like a brilliant option for some lone time with water. I know that I probably won’t get tired of snorkeling and might ignore the food – which you anyway say is ok! I wonder if they have scuba options from the island too 😀

  7. I am yet to discover the beauty of water-sports and adventures in Thailand. Also, a visit to these emerald islands is incomplete. Your captures of the azure waters are indeed tempting to kick off my third visit to Thailand.I am glad to read about Vegan options available there though a bit angry that some these tourist places mint money at unfathomable levels.

  8. Wow didn’t really know about this place Koh Nang Yuan before reading about it here. Looks like a wonderful place to visit with lovely beaches. You seem to have had a lot of fun here! Given that vegan food is available here means that all loose ends for us are are tied here! Thanks for sharing

  9. I have always wanted to visit some of the islands in Thailand – but not for any of the water activities. I just wanted to lay on the beach (under an umbrella) and enjoy the food and drinks and friendly Thai culture! The scenery is so beautiful as well!

  10. Looks lovely! Didn’t even hear about the Koh Nang Yuan island before, and judging by your photos, you’re right, one should definitely visit when coming to Thailand.
Love that it’s connected by sand and that you can take long walks from one side to the other. And of course, would love to snorkel in it’s waters. Putting it on my bucket list. 😉

  11. I’ve not explored much of central Thailand and have also never been to any Thai beach. On my last trip to Thailand I remember wanting to visit a beach but didn’t know where to go. Thanks for the recommendation to visit Koh Nang Yuan. It’s a beautiful beach with incredibly clear waters and it sounds like you had a blast. I like the idea that no plastic is allowed on the beach:) Will definitively keep it in mind for my next Thailand visit.

  12. Ah I was meant to visit both Koh Nang Yuan and Koh Tao, both have been explained as some of the most beautiful and scenic places in the world, but I got to Koh Samui and fell in love with the place and the villa I was staying in, so I never got any further. I’ll have to visit some day!

  13. We went to Thailand about two years ago and loved our experience! I would love to go back and explore Koh Nang Yuan! I have heard of many activities and places to go and see on that part of the island! xo – Kam

  14. I have yet to get to Thailand, but hopefully one day soon. My mom really wants to go. It looks beautiful and of course affordable. You are brave for being on that rock like that. I would have been a little nervous.

  15. I love the idea of taking a day trip on a Thai longtail boat to a gorgeous island such as Koh Nang Yuan. The waters look so pristine, I can imagine how amazing it must be to snorkel there. Love the views from that viewpoint. Thanks for a detailed breakdown of the cost Shreya. Reading all your Thailand posts has made me want to go back someday!

  16. All the “Koh’s” are awesome! Just went to Koh Chang two months ago and the experience was priceless! I love how cheap Thailand Foods are, having handful ingredients and hour preparations, I hope it will stay the same! I believe you’ve got so much fun and friends, I love your selfie on the white beach!
