First-Time Thailand in 9 Days – Day 3
After grabbing some quick lunch from the rooftop restaurant of our hotel, we checked and kept our our luggage safely at the reception. Then we took a tuk-tuk and headed to explore the famous Siam Square shopping district.
Highlights of the Day
- Siam Square Shopping District
- Madame Tussaud’s, Siam Discovery
- Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World (not recommended)
- Early dinner at Food Republic, Siam Center
- Overnight bus to Gulf of Thailand from Khao San Road
Siam Square Shopping District
It is a like a small city in Bangkok city. It has expanded widely and houses a dozens of malls. The top 10 shopping malls/areas you should not miss are as follows:
- MBK: It sells everything starting from clothes, fashion accessories, handbags, to modern furniture. It also houses goods from the grey-market, so think twice before paying a sky-rocketing price. It also a bowling alley, movie theater, art museum, and food courts.
- Siam Square: The area near Bangkok’s oldest university – Chulalongkorn University – is known as Siam Square and it houses the collection of local designers and independent entrepreneurs who set the fashion trend of the country. Of course, you would get cheaper deals here than malls.
- Digital Getaway: It has all the latest IT gadgets and you can be assured of your purchase as it does not sell any counterfeit products.
- Siam Discovery: This mall is all about sophisticated and high-edge brand products, and the top floor houses Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum and Sky Dining – a stylish food court.
- Siam Center: This mall houses both mid-range and high-range brand products, and also includes the collection of branded entrepreneurs. The food court called Food Republic is very interesting as it consists of all types of cuisines across the world, mainly South-East Asian countries.
- Siam Paragon: This vast mall boasts high-scale brands along with Lamborghini showroom and also a luxurious movie theater.
- Central World: It is also a widely-spread mall having everything from trendy fashion, high-tech gadgets, clothing boutiques, imported groceries, and even an ice-skating rink.
- Gaysorn: It is just another mall for high-end designer and luxury goods.
- Erawan: It is a lovely boutique mall that houses the most elegant lifestyle brands.
- Amarin Plaza: It is more popular for its tailors, fashion stores, boutiques and craft shops.
We hopped around all the above-mentioned places, but spent more time in Siam Discovery as we decided to visit Madame Tussauds and Siam Center as we decided to have dinner there.
Siam Discovery
The top floor has so many photogenic places and we had so much fun taking pictures here!
Madame Tussauds Wax Museum
It is advisable to but the entrance tickets online as you get them at a cheaper price than buying it at desk.
The combined ticket for Madame Tussauds and Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World cost each of us around 2000 ฿.
Posing with the stars from Hollywood, politics, music, science, arts, etc. at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum – my first visit to one of its kind – was super fun.
If you are sure about the date you are going to visit Madame Tussauds, I would suggest to book the ticket online as it is cheaper and has some offers also at times.
Sea life bangkok ocean world
This was another disheartening visit as all we could see are aquatic species trapped in large aquariums for our entertainment, instead of being in the real ocean – I would never recommend to visit such places, never!
Siam Center
Early Dinner at Food Republic was pretty exciting – as the food court had food from ever South-East Asian country, plus some American and European stalls were also there, but I liked to stick to traditional Thai food, though one of my friends ordered Indian food too.
Night Bus
We took a taxi back to the house, picked our luggage, and a tuk-tuk dropped us to the Lomprayah Office at Khao San Road, just at the Rambuttri Road.
The ticket to Koh Tao from Bangkok was 1300 ฿ each.
After checking in, we waited for the bus that arrived half an hour late, around 9.30 PM. Lomprayah is a trusted transport company, having comfortable multi-axle seats and also a toilet facility in the bus.
Goodnight! See you guys tomorrow in Gulf of Thailand!
