Splendid Day in Carcassonne

Road-Tripping Spain and Southern France Plus Ibiza in 12 Days – DAY 7

Located on a jagged hilltop and flaring with zigzag escarpments, huge walls, and peaked spires, the UNESCO-listed fortified city of Carcassonne came to us as a surprise. We did not have any plan to visit this beautiful medieval walled city before. It was Richie’s idea to take a detour to France before routing back to Barcelona, Spain. When we first saw Carcassonne, it looked like something out of a children’s storybook – a charming magic castle appearing unexpectedly on the landscape. Instantly, we decided to spend a night here and that was one of the best things we did!

Roadtrip from San Sebastian to Carcassonne

Initially, Richie and I had plans to reach Barcelona from San Sebastian via the interior of Spain. This would have taken around 6 h straight drive to cover that 570 km. But we changed our mind and took a detour to France.

Breakfast in San Sebastian Accommodation
Before we checked out from our AirBnb stay in San Sebastian, we were served a heart-filling breakfast – I have already started loving toasts with salsa – though it turned out to be a brunch as we woke up late
Crossing Spain and entering France
Richie drove around 20 km north from San Sebastian and we reached the border post – we paid a high amount of toll and entered France

We left San Sebastian at around 12.30 PM and at around 5 PM, we reached Toulouse, the capital of Southern France. The Garonne River bisects the city. The 17th-century Canal du Midi plus the many buildings made of terracotta bricks have made Toulouse popular.

Bridge over Garonne River in Toulouse
Toulouse is also known as “La Ville Rose”, meaning “The Pink City” – as we could see while crossing the bridges over Garonne river
Canal du Midi in Toulouse
Canal du Midi is around 240 km long canal in Southern France, which links the Garonne river to the Mediterranean Sea
Brunch in petrol station for just €7
We went inside a supermarket in a fuel station close to Toulouse, and found delicious vegetarian buffet spread for just €7 – this was our early dinner for the day

In another hour’s time, we reached Carcassonne – the biggest medieval town of Europe. We entered the newer part of the town, crossed the bridge, and drove into the old city. The high stone walls and tall towers of the old city welcomed us while wrapping the rocky top of the hill as a parchment blanket. We fell in instant love with Carcassonne.

Beautiful bridge in Carcassonne
On our way to the Old Town, we crossed Pont Vieux, a 600-year-old bridge that connects the old city with the newer part of the town with a series of graceful stone arches

Ibis Budget Carcassonne La Cite

We had not sorted our accommodation in Carcassonne earlier as this was a sudden plan. But luckily, we came across Ibis Budget Carcassonne La Cite hotel. It is located very close to the castle ramparts, and room was available. Ibis Budget rooms pleased us in Amsterdam, Netherlands and also in Madrid, Spain. So we did not think twice before taking up a room in Ibis Budget Carcassonne.

Our room in Ibis Budget Carcassonne La Cite
The room was cozy and stylish, with a soft duvet, a sparkling clean shower and toilet, and free WiFi

Cite de Carcassonne

Access to the walls and the keep and the monument is from 10 AM to 6.30 PM during the summer months, and cost €9 per person.

The Old Town of Carcassonne is entirely fortified, hence known as Cite de Carcassonne, meaning the Citadel of Carcassonne. It is one of the most visited sights of France. Romans originally built the fortress. There are areas now inside the citadel where the Romans laid their first brick. Later,  various conquerors expanded the citadel, destroyed it also, and again rebuilt it. Let me take you in and around this beautiful UNESCO-listed fortress.

On the way to Cite de Carcassonne
Cite de Carcassonne was just a km away from our hotel – we loved walking past those peaceful roads leading to the fortress

Posing inside the city walls of Carcassonne
It was already 8 PM and the whole city wall lit up beautifully making our picture perfect for the evening!
Artist in Carcassonne
This lady was stitching names on papercards and Richie requested her to stitch my blogsite name on one card – that was cute and brilliant at the same time!
Chocolate shop in Carcassonne
These are various colorful types of chocolates in one of the chocolate shops in Carcassonne, from where we packed dairy free dark chocolates – my favorite was cranberry dark chocolate!
Candy shop in Carcassonne
Those weird-and-also-cute looking stuff are nothing but candies sold by local traders
Inside the citadel of Carcassonne
As I stepped in the interior of the citadel, I felt I was transported back in time
Time travel in Carcassonne
The Old Town has a maze of streets spread out and as I walked up the streets, I could feel how life was there in the medieval time
Local crowd in Carcassonne Fortress
That evening when we visited the Old Town of Carcassonne, there were fewer tourists and more locals adding to the original vibes of the place
Interesting interior of the Medieval Town of Carcassonne
The buildings and the streets inside the Old Town looked like they have never been faded by time
Restored ruin in Carcassonne
Carcassonne was actually a ruin and I was wondering about the painstaking work that had been undergone to restore it back to what it is now!
Silent vibes inside the Citadel of Carcassonne
We got ourselves lost a few times in the winding streets of the Old Town, but couldn’t get too far, as the city has four walls and that is everything
Caricature inside Carcassonne
Richie got his caricature drawn by a senior artist inside the Old Town of Carcassonne
Moonlit night in Carcassonne
The night was dark but the moon lit so brightly giving us shamanistic vibes of the place
Ibis Budget Carcassonne La Cite, Carcassonne
We strolled back to our hotel – it was around 10 PM

It was one of the best days of our trip. This was unplanned, yet the most pleasant surprise of the whole trip. Taking a detour to France was the best idea. Carcassonne took our heart away. I highly recommend fellow travelers to plan their visit here when in Southern France. Or if you are close to Northern Spain, then take a detour like we did.

  1. Solid good information. The best travel experiences tends to be the unexpected and spontaneous detours you take.

  2. The canal du midi looks beautiful! The picture with you two with the castle is great! the lights were definitely perfect! We would definitely like to go to the chocolate store. We would also like exploring this medieval city. There seems to be a few of these types of cities spread out through Europe. They are always enjoyable to explore.
