The Famous Fruit Sandwich in Japan

During our train ride, we enjoyed fresh fruits for breakfast followed by the famous Japanese fruit sandwich that my friends had packed from Fruit Cafe Tamaru Hiroshima. We were in Hiroshima on day 4, and my friends forgot to give it to me initially. Never mind, as had kept it in the hotel fridge in Matsuyama, it was not tasting stale. But I realized that I am not a fan of fruit and cream sandwiches, I can have them separately.

Known as the “Land of Sunshine,” Okayama boasts beautiful gardens, including the renowned Korakuen Garden, and historic sites such as Okayama Castle. But we were there just to board the Shinkansen bound for Himeji. The high-speed Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen train journey offered a seamless transition, whisking us away to our next destination – Himeji – with speed and efficiency.

Himeji Castle vs. Osaka Castle

  1. Looks:
    • Himeji Castle: Known as the “White Heron,” Himeji Castle is famous for its elegant, white appearance. It has many buildings and walls, giving it a complex and beautiful look.
    • Osaka Castle: Osaka Castle looks strong and big with its thick stone walls. It’s also white like Himeji Castle, but it has a more solid and powerful appearance.
  2. Where They Are:
    • Himeji Castle: You can find Himeji Castle in Himeji City, surrounded by green trees and hills.
    • Osaka Castle: Osaka Castle sits right in the middle of Osaka City, surrounded by tall buildings and a big park.
  3. History:
    • Himeji Castle: Himeji Castle has been around since the 14th century and has seen a lot of history, including wars and disasters. Also, it is one of the “Juni-shi” original castles in Japan. These castles were historically significant fortresses built during the feudal period and are considered emblematic of Japan’s architectural heritage and military history.
    • Osaka Castle: Osaka Castle was built in the 16th century and has its own stories about Japan’s past.
  4. Visiting:
    • Himeji Castle: Visitors can explore all around Himeji Castle, go inside the buildings, and even climb to the top for great views.
    • Osaka Castle: At Osaka Castle, there are museums and things to learn about its history. You can also walk around the park and enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring.
  5. Size and Time Taken to Visit:
    • Himeji Castle: Larger and sprawling, requiring about 2 hours for a thorough visit.
    • Osaka Castle: More compact, allowing for exploration within about 1 hour.

Verdict: Both castles are special in their own way and offer a lot to see and learn for visitors who love history and beautiful places. But if you were to choose ONE, only ONE, then I would highly recommend Himeji Castle!

3 thoughts on “Ultimate Japan Itinerary – Himeji Castle Vs. Osaka Castle”

  1. I had not heard of a fruit sandwich when we visited Japan! A fun train treat. We saw the Osaka Castle when we were in Japan. And we’re certainly glad we did – even if we did not visit at the great time of year you did! But it looks like we need to plan to visit the Himeji Castle on a return visit. It would be stunning to visit during sakura season and see it framed in such colours. We certainly would not want to miss the adjacent Kokoen garden. Japanese gardens were something that really stuck with us after our visit to Japan.

  2. Both castles are beautiful and grandeur, but, if I have to choose between the two, I think I will go with Himeji Castle. Himeji Castle looks more elegant with its greyish roof. It’s good that visitors can go to the top and view the city from above. It’s interesting that both castles were built above the rocks.

  3. You managed to fit in a lot in one day in Japan. I agree with you, if you visit only one castle, you should make it Himeiji Castle. It is the most famous of the castles in Japan and has been a movie location too in numerous films. Also, it is one of the original castles still standing, while Osaka castle is a concrete reconstruction. Glad that you liked the fruit sandwiches.
